Surgery Information

Bariatrics

Bariatric (or "weight-loss") surgeries have changed the lives of thousands who have not been successful with other attempts at weight loss. They help you decrease your food intake, lose excess weight, take control of your health and can even improve or resolve obesity-related health conditions.

At NHSA, all of our surgeons specialize in bariatric surgery. We have experienced excellent clinical outcomes, received outstanding patient feedback and have been designated as a Bariatric Center of Excellence by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS). ASMBS provides this designation to programs with a demonstrated record of accomplishments and favorable outcomes for weight loss surgery. The rate of complications for ASMBS Bariatric Surgery Centers of Excellence is extremely low. All bariatric procedures are performed laparoscopically.

Gastric Banding

With gastric banding, an inflatable band is placed around the upper part of the stomach, limiting the amount of food that can pass through. This reduces your appetite, limits how much you can eat and slows digestion. At NHSA we use the LAP-BAND® system.

Gastric Bypass

With gastric bypass (the Roux-en-Y procedure), the surgeon sections off a small portion of the stomach to create a smaller stomach pouch. Then he sections off a portion of the small intestine and attaches it to the new stomach pouch

Gastric Sleeve

With a gastric sleeve, the surgeon removes a large portion of the stomach, leaving behind a thin "sleeve" that holds about 15% as much as the original. Stomach openings remain intact so that digestion occurs normally.

Gastric Plication Surgery

The GPS is a new procedure that involves reducing the size of the stomach by decreasing its usual volume capacity. This is done by imbricating (overlapping the stomach edges) and stitching (plicating) the stomach wall reducing it to the size of a narrow tube. This surgery emulates the sleeve gastrectomy but does not involve any cutting or stapling of the stomach. Your natural stomach remains; the stomach is simply folded on itself so that the stomach volume is reduced. The gastric plication is a new procedure, with great results expected due to its minimal invasive nature and safe approach.
